The Big Data Cup will be an innovative competition designed to bring together the best minds in soccer analytics, providing an exciting platform for attendees to showcase their expertise. The competition will feature two distinct categories; one for coaches and one for analysts. The coaches' competition will take place in person on the final day of the conference, May 13th, while the analysts' competition will be conducted remotely. Both competitions will test participants’ ability to use data to improve performance and make informed decisions.

In the Coaches’ Competition, you'll dive deep into the performance data of the UNCW men’s soccer team. Your task is to critically analyze the team's performance, specifically identifying one player along with a specific area/position in need of improvement, and strategize a solution.
Working within a £2 million budget, you must “purchase” a player who best fits the team's needs and strategic goals. Participants are expected to provide a detailed rationale for their decision; explaining how the new player will improve the team’s dynamics and contribute to addressing the identified area/position for improvement.
The Analysts’ Competition is all about pushing the boundaries of soccer analytics.
Participants will receive:
Data from 10 UNCW men's soccer matches - through SciSports' platform
Participants expected to:
Build an xG (expected goals) model
